Knitting for my little boys has always been fun. I love making cute little things and putting it on them. For the last several months knitting for little boys has hit an all new high!
B has reached a level where he understand that mama makes things and that she uses “maps”, yarn, and needles. The only thing that is lacking an understanding is that it does in fact take time!
The first thing we did “together” is Robbie. Robbie came about when B was flipping through my patterns and said “Oh! A robot! Mama please knit this for me!” he even went into the stash bucket and picked out his yarn. Red and blue. I let him do all of the decision making. We spent three days together knitting this robot and he loves it!

(by the way, I would’ve been nice if I’d taken a picture when I finished him rather than 2 months later after he’d been everywhere!)

For his birthday I decided to make him the Land and Sea Play set (although I was a failure) and now we are working on this together. We’ve just about finished the train (can you say seaming nightmare!?) and are well under way on the car (no it’s not the cab, he wanted an orange car!)

And the most recent, “red shoes”! These are the Childrens Felted Clog pattern from Fiber Trends (which you can now purchase and download the PDF by the way) and Cascade 220. Neither one of my skeins were full so I’m not exactly sure how much I really used. I love the way 220 felts though! These slippers took about 3 hours each. Super quick, fun and he loves them!

Next on the little boy agenda, Mr. Roboto!

Sad but happy encounter…

While shop sitting at What’s Needlin’ Ewe today I had a somewhat sad yet happy encounter.
I was spinning away and looked up to see an elderly man watching me. We have this inside joke at the shop about “man alert” (in downtown Mount Airy we just don’t have knitting men!) so I quickly asked the man if I could help him? I looked him up a down and noticed he was wearing a fair isle sweater vest that was obviously hand knit (hey, a knitter knows!) and obviously well worn and loved. I got a bit excited thinking well maybe this man does knit! It’s 90 degrees outside so it takes someone dedicated to knitwear to wear such a thing on a day like today. The man asked if I minded if he looked around. “Of course not!” I replied. He proceeded to tell me that it had been years since he’d been in a knit shop and that his wife was a knitter and he carted her to every shop they could find and that she would’ve loved to have lived long enough to see a yarn shop in Mount Airy (we’ve only been here 6 months). I expressed my condolences for the loss of his wife and he told me about how much she loved to knit and that his vest was the last thing she had knit for him. He said that he wears it as often as possible feeling his wife through the stitches.

I hope my baby boys cherish my hand knits after I’m gone and this has really inspired me to knit for them no matter how big they get!

Wow, almost two months without blogging! I’ve got some catching up to do!
It has been a busy time though! I’ve done a lot of knitting and a lot of work.
In case you didn’t know I opened a new site, www.handpaintedsocks.com and that has taken quite a bit of time!
I’ve also been busy dyeing up new colorways for spring!

Flock to Sock 2010!

You asked for it and here it is!

We all had such a blast last year that I’m going to do things a little different! We are going to make Flock to Sock a year long event!

For Flock to Sock this year you will sign up for 6 bi-monthly shipments starting in March. You will be billed via paypal one month before the shipment (for example you’ll pay in February, get fiber in March and pay again in April)
For your welcome package you will also receive a handmade WIP bag! These bags are perfect for keeping your handspun sock projects safe will knitting! You will also receive a pattern with guidelines for spinning handspun sock yarn and knitting the sock.
Each shipment will contain 4 oz of fiber rotating between Superwash Merino, Superwash Merino and Nylon, Merino/Tencel, Merino/Bamboo and Superwash BFL. There is an option for a double scoop to get 8 oz of fiber.
Every shipment includes a limited edition colorway for club member only (we do not release our colorways outside the club!) shipping, and various spinning and sock goodies.

Weaving? Me?

We had a fantastic visit to Spin a Yarn in West Jefferson, NC today and I’ve decided to give weaving a try. You should try everything right? Anyway, I’ve bought my yarn and now am just trying to figure out a day to take the class! I’m so excited and plan on weaving a ton of scarves. Like I need another hobby right? I’m thinking on doing a video cast of my lesson.
